Greenwich Picturehouse

I hate to admit than even as a self-proclaimed film-lover myself, sometimes the prospect of going to the cinema can be a drag. Often you will have little privacy, the seats are uncomfortable and there is a prevailing feeling that you can’t quite relax as in the comfort of your home. And that is without mentioning the cost, especially considering the recent disappearance of Orange Wednesday’s.

This could not be further away from the Greenwich Picturehouse experience, particularly if you’re lucky enough to see a film in Screen 5. It boasts its own bar, reclining velvet chairs and an abundance of leg room, a world away from the sticky floors and the nattering teenagers that seem to frequent Odeon’s across London.

Of course, if you miss out on screen 5 there is the lounge bar overlooking Greenwich High Road through panoramic windows, as well as two restaurants and a confectionery counter offering caramel espresso popcorn! The bar also serves the fantastic local Meantime ales, which can be taken into the cinema in plastic cups.

We caught a film called Trash, which despite some typically pedantic reviews, was a thoroughly enjoyable watch. With a recognisable cast (Wagner Moura, Martin Sheen), two favela boys stumble across a cryptic fortune and are pursued across vivid urban landscapes, facing up to the violence and political corruption of Brazil. A good film to accompany a very pleasant evening.

A ticket is just over £10 a head, expensive, but the difference in price is minimal in comparison to other cinemas, while the gap in quality is evident. You can also become a member to receive significant discounts in all Picturehouse cinemas.

Take your kids, your girlfriend, or your nan. The Picturehouse will not disappoint!
